Reno Ice, the region's first and only NHL-regulation sized ice rink, has officially opened.

The long-awaited ice rink located at 15500 Wedge Parkway has been under construction for the past year, and the opening date was originally slated for late November. However, due to COVID-19, the completion of the facility was extended into January.

According to Joel Grace, President of Reno Ice’s Board of Directors, the NHL regulation ice arena will be opening in early December, with an estimated construction completion in late November.

"A group of local business professionals who had been traveling to South Tahoe from Reno on a weekly basis to play in a men’s league recognized the need for a rink in Reno, which is the largest winter sports demographic area without an ice arena," said Grace. "With the support of a local, lead donor, they decided to put together a non-profit to build Reno Ice."

The Greater Reno Community Ice Skating Association (GRCISA) became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in order to generate community support for construction of Reno Ice, a state of the art ice sports arena in south Reno, according to the Reno Ice website.

Reno Ice will offer the Northern Nevada community various programs such as private lessons, public ice skating sessions, hockey leagues, broomball, curling, trade shows, tournaments, performances, figure skating, private parties and special events on and off of the ice.

Currently, there are four programs being offered:

Public Skate - Public Skate reservations are now live. Anyone entering the Reno Ice facility must wear a face mask without exception. Skate rentals are available for $4 a pair. There is currently no walk up pay, reservations must be made online prior to arriving. For more information, visit https://renoice.com/public-skating

Learn to Skate - Learn to Skate USA offers beginner skating lessons to skaters of all ages and abilities by way of a trusted, standardized curriculum endorsed by U.S. Figure Skating, USA Hockey and US Speedskating.

Tot classes allow skaters to build confidence while learning to skate and are designed to help children ages 6 and younger develop the ABCs of movement – Agility, Balance, Coordination and Speed.

Basic Skill classes teach the fundamentals of ice skating in order to provide a strong foundation, for ages 7 and above. Upon completion, skaters can confidently advance to more specialized areas of skating.
